FFXIV JOB GLAM CHALLENGE - 20 OF 21: WHITE MAGE

this glam is not a surprise for @nongunktional or @pillowfriendly since i was wearing it for a dungeon run we did LMAO. alas it's sick as hell

i thought white mage would be difficult because pretty much all of their artifact armor is boring as hell, and i'm trying to emulate those sets a little with this challenge. whm in particular has an iconic look in FF with their white-and-red robes. so i tried to do that but with a twist and i think it turned out great. it's a tough call but this might be my favorite set in the challenge.

white mages in ffxiv specifically have an eldritch horror nature gremlin thing going on with them under the surface so i wanted to emphasize the blood red in their color scheme here. blood for the blood lily and all that. like my Light-based RPR glam from last year, i also wanted to channel sin eaters and how they're more feral and bestial in general, so i used the male viera foot claws and long, sharp fingernails.

i use horns in my glams a lot and this is partly because i like them, and partly because viera get to wear them more than most head pieces. but with ffxiv WHM especially i wanted to make sure i incorporated them since the padjal have horns, lol.

Valkariel has always been a character trying to find the right balance/compromise between conflicting ideals, but often ends up going too far in one direction and then overcompensating in the other.

In her pursuit for ever stronger magicks since she fled to Coerthas, Valkariel has very likely incrementally upset the balance of her aether. The events in Norvrandt significantly hastened those effects. We suspect that the light took particularly well to her because her fire affinity has always been an overwhelming force, and fire and light are intuitively correlated. In the purely hypothetical situation that she loses control, of either her magic or mind, Valkariel would make for the ultimate sin eater.

As the player behind the character, I am so very blessed to have encountered many kind helpful souls in Eorzea -- those who patiently explained rotations and mechanics when I started out -- those who care very little for my pursuit of glamour, but come along on an adventure anyway -- those who do care as much as I do about glamour, who come up to me and tell me their kind words and share their creations with me. These are all the sorts of things that would pull Valkariel back from the brink, so to speak. I am nowhere near as dramatic as the character Valkariel, but these moments are some of the brightest little sparks in my time in Eorzea. So I hope you're having a good time on this little adventure, because I sure am with your company :>

i really do not talk enough abt how hilde's hair going white (which he can glamour but not dye. his hair no longer takes dye. important distinction. to him) wasn't only the like, constant visual reminder of his "monstrosity" (= sin eater shit, he never fully turned & his aether is no longer corrupted of course but the white hair is part of the things that like. mark him as having been irreversibly affected by the light, like the gilded/whitened scales, the blank white eyes & his legs now being digitigrade bc he did partially turn into a creature during the dying gasp) but also like. he arrived in eorzea with his hair bleached white. his garlean family had been forcing their own physical traits upon him & white hair was among them. you know? it all ties him back to garlemald. he can never escape garlemald.

A snippet from chapter 1 of Trailblazing & Stargazing

Voldemort was dead. Again. They had made it back to present day, safe and sound. The children had gone back to Hogwarts. The grownups, including none other than reformed Death Eater, former school bully, overall nightmare of their childhood Draco Malfoy, had spent a few hours at Grimmauld Place going over the latest events. Harry and Ginny seemed to have finally accepted that Albus was a Slytherin and Scorpius Malfoy was his best friend. They were going to have to deal with the ferret more in the future and were trying to digest that. Ron still didn’t like Draco one bit, but Hermione appreciated the fact that they had both been civil to each other. 

She dreaded the moment Ron would realize that Scorpius had a huge crush on Rose, and the feeling was probably mutual, although Rose herself didn’t seem to be aware of that just yet. She thought Malfoy had changed dramatically, long gone was the spoiled racist brat he had been in school. The war had changed him, just like it had changed them, and the whole tragedy of his wife’s blood curse and subsequent death had left deep scars on him. He was now a generous man and he was still trying to atone for his sins, most of society had forgiven him but he couldn’t seem to forgive himself. Scorpius was a nice kid as well, he looked just like his dad at that age but had a kind smile instead of a mean smirk. He’d grow up to be a good man, without his father’s traumatic past. Draco was a good dad, much unlike Lucius.

Hermione and Ron apparated back into the garden and walked inside their empty two-story brick house. When they had married they had chosen to live in a muggle town on the outskirts of London, similar to where she had grown up. They had muggle technology, like a fridge and a TV, and magical commodities such as floo connection and owl post. Both she and Ron had gotten driving licenses and the children had attended muggle primary school, together with the Potters, before going to Hogwarts. They had the best of both worlds and Hermione really wanted to make it easier for other wizarding families to do the same.

“I’ll make some tea. Are you hungry?” asked Ron, nervously threading his hand through his slightly thinning, but still very brightly ginger, hair. 

“Yes please! I’m starving, really! I’m too old for battling evil wizards, I’m afraid.” Replied Hermione sitting down on the sofa. 

Her hair was still wild, as if it struggled to contain her energy, but some strands here and there were turning grey and she had a few thin lines at the corners of her eyes. She was never one to care about glamour charms or muggle make-up. She showed the signs of her age proudly, she had earned every one of them through the pain, joy, loss and achievement she had gone through in her 41 years of life. Not that she was old, but society always expected women to look like horny teenagers and she would have none of that rubbish.

She picked up one of the many scrolls of parchment her personal assistant had left on the coffee table, as per previous agreement, for her to review. The wizarding world hadn't stopped while the Golden Trio was traveling through time to prevent history from changing for the worst, she had to keep up. She took her job as Minister of Magic very seriously, she was trying to change the future, thank you very much.

Ron handed her a steaming cup of tea and, not finding any room on the table, sat down balancing a plate of samosas on his knee. 

“You know I love you, right?” he said with a deep sigh while nervously tapping his fingers on a cushion. 

“Of course I do, I love you too Ron, you are my best friend.” Her eyes never lifted from the parchment as she replied and took a samosa from the plate. She took a bite, enjoying the spicy goodness within and then sipped her tea, still reading. 

“You are my best friend too ‘Mione.” He stopped for a second and swallowed air, his Adam’s apple slightly bobbing. “That’s why I think we should get a divorce.”

For someone of the Source to take in five Lightwardens' light would surely transform them into an ultimate sixth. For a voidsent to do the same may go some way to fixing their overabundance of darkness.. but that doesn't mean the end result still won't end up more like a sin eater. In this case, Forgiven Defiance; or, had she gone all the way, Lightwarden Philautia.

Here are some more pictures without quite so many effects, both inside group pose and out of it. Surprisingly enough, I haven't actually changed Lorenza's skintone for this glamour - yet making her hair darker and swapping the black skin gradients for white ones seems to have produced that effect. Either that, or the lighting's just odd in this dungeon.

My main design inspiration here was another character of mine, Linariyn - specifically the vibes of a drawing my friend made of her. However, I did end up keeping a couple of Lorenza-specific features, such as the hairstyle, tail, and specific shape of the claws.

Ochlys is a slightly older, sin-eater experiment, like a certain Light Warden, but nowhere near as powerful and a lot more susceptible to issues as a result. She is not a WoL oc.

She's also just me having fun. I'm very unserious and just enjoy playing around with stuff from time to time.

Bels lore is WoL stuff and I wrote it almost a decade ago. I should redo it.

7. Have they gone through any physical changes? What scars have they collected, and how do they feel about them? Did they sprout horns or other features as a result of spells or pacts gone wrong? How did light corruption impact them? Or have they walked away miraculously unscathed? Are they more peculiar for how eerily unmarred they are?

Oh boy, has he.

I would argue that the light corruption changed him the most. Aurlaux lives in a permanent state of not being exactly mortal but not being a full sin eater either. His body is stuck in a form of half-transformation, as most of the light aether could not be cleansed from his body, but enough was removed to not fully turn him.

This has lead to an odd number of issues that he is unfortunately stuck dealing with such as:

Glowing light cracks on the right side of his body

A glowing right eye

Parts of his body have weird bumps on them from wings and claws that never took form

A line around his jaw from a mask that also never formed

Pearlescent bodily fluids

Hypermobility virtually everywhere

Longer limbs

Along with the light bullshittery, there are also several battle scars on his body due to general recklessness and lack of care for his physical self.

The big ones are:

A large scythe scar across his back from a certain garlean fighty boy. It is one of the few things he has to remember him by.

Two large claw marks on his stomach and leg from Nidhogg (Nidstinien??)

A large sword scar from Elidibus on his shoulder.

A separate katana scar from Zenos on his thigh.

A deep scratch mark from Zunha on his face.

Backalley Brume top-chop.

Blast scar around his right eye.

As for how he feels about his collection, the battle scars across his body do not usually bother him, it's simply part of the job after all.

The light markings on the other hand are a different story. He actually has a glamour crystal embedded in his eye mask specifically to make it less apparent to other people. It's better to not worry other people, especially those close to him. He simply told those who were with him in Norvrandt that they faded away after defeating Hades. Whether or not they actually believe him is a different story.

I love using the World of Darkness as a sandbox, but my brain really doesn't like to be scattershot about it's number of projects. And that makes the Promethean and Begotten AUs VERY research-intensive.

Not a complaint, but an observation.

But my gawd. There's an inkling to want to take some of the other splats/settings it has available.

It's got a fun take on changelings. Just a blurb from the wiki I lean into:

Changelings are the protagonists of Changeling: The Lost. Day 22 - Color Palette (Swap)

i was a little stumped on this one but thank you @flame-of-tar-valon for inspiring me! since reapers are tied to the void i thought a sin eater/lightwarden take would be fun, especially since i already had the potd scythe laying around. since sin eaters are feral i incorporated talons and claws to contrast the more traditional angelic look. white and gold is definitely not a go-to combo for me so it was a challenge making something that didn't look like a white mage knockoff.

i LOVE how this turned out, i'll probably keep the glam in rotation to be completely honest lol. it's a shame you can't use fashion accessories in instances or i would have gotten some shots in Mt. Gulg or the Innocence trial arena.
